Mentors Program will conduct onsite field experiences (FEs) at multiple venues within Texas A&M University (TAMU) to excite precollege students, to clarify misconceptions about scientific careers, and to improve comprehension of scientific concepts and their applications. During the FEs, the students will have the opportunity to visit research labs and other educational venues at TAMU such as:

  •      SIMulation lab,
  •      National Center for Therapeutics Manufacturing (NCTM),
  •      Biomedical Engineering department,
  •      Anatomy lab,
  •      Public Health labs, etc.

The students will learn about health, research and technology careers and participate in hands-on activities that reflect “real world” careers. As part of the experience, they will also be engaged in career talks from, and open discussions with a diverse group of faculty and trainees, to demonstrate that STEM careers are both attainable and desirable.

Apart from the avenue FEs provide for experiential learning, they also serve as fun time for the students to keep them interested and engaged. A lot of games and competitions are incorporated into the hands-on activities at the various venues. Students also participate in fun quiz games, such as a customized Jeopardy game, with questions based on their experiences all through the day’s events.
